Motorcycle Accident Claims

The vast majority of motorcyclists take pride in their riding and apply skills of anticipation, concentration and expertise while riding on the road.  They invariably see past the vehicle ahead as part of this anticipation process.  As a result insurance statistics have previously shown that around 1 in 12 motorcyclists will have a motorcycle accident claim each year compared to around 1 in 6 car drivers.  However, they cannot anticipate everything and even the best riders and exposed to human error by other drivers on the road.

Statistical data shows that by far the majority of serious motorcycle accidents occur on roads with a speed limit of 60mph at the weekend, with the majority of motorcycle accidents involving cars.  In addition, motorcyclists are frequently injured in accidents involving diesel/oil spillages or defective road surfaces.

In collisions car drivers are generally at fault in 2/3 of the accidents, whereas weather conditions are only a factor in about 2% of accidents.  The main cause of the accidents  is not speed, but the car driver just not seeing the motorcycle.

Injuries to the legs account for 50% of all injuries sustained in motorcycle accidents.  They are also susceptible to multiple injuries given the nature of collisions and the fact that they can then hit road furniture or other vehicles.  Internal injuries can also be common, because while the body might stop moving what is inside takes longer to stop.

Improved helmets and clothing have gone a long way to reducing the severity of injuries (as long as they are worn).  However, while crash bars have a tendency to reduce leg injuries they increase upper limb injuries.
