About us

Richard Clarke completed his law degree in 1989 and took time out before qualifying as a barrister in 1992 and then cross-qualifying as a solicitor in 1997.  Upon qualification as a solicitor he became head of a civil and family department in a firm based in Luton and Milton Keynes. He then joined a firm dealing with personal injury, family and road traffic crime in Dunstable, rising to Managing Partner within 1 year.  Following 9 years as Managing Partner and taking the firm through a 500% increase in turnover he left the firm to set up Routh Clarke Solicitors on 1 January 2009.

Richard has been a Deputy District Judge (Civil) since 2003 and a Deputy District Judge (Family) since 2011, dealing with all aspects of civil and family proceedings, as well as costs. Prior to this he was the Regional Secretary of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) as well as lecturing in civil law for CLT. He holds Higher Rights of Audience, entitling him to appear in any Court in the land, and spent 12 years on the specialist Law Society Personal Injury Panel.  In addition, he also completed the Open University "Fundamentals of Senior Management" course in 2008 passing with a merit.

Richard spends what little spare time he has with his family, reading, motorcycling or riding around on one of his bicycles.  As well as having been the legal advisor to Young Enterprise East of England, he tries to do one main charity cycle ride a year, having started with Palace to Palace for the Prince's Trust in 2007.  In 2008 he rode from London to Brighton with the BHF for the first time.  He enjoyed it so much that he decided to extend the ride in 2009 to include riding back to London. It really is down to Brighton.  That means it is pretty much all uphill on the way back!  He is not sure he will be doing that again.

Nick Routh obtained a first degree in Computer Studies before pursuing a career in the Royal Navy, where he had appointments within the School of Mechanical Engineering and as an Instructor at the Royal Navy’s basic training establishment before being seconded to the Royal Marines.

On leaving the Navy he completed an accelerated Law Degree within two years at Southampton University. He then trained to become a Barrister and was called to the Bar in 1999.

He cross-qualified as a Solicitor in 2002 and became a Partner in 2006. He left at the end of 2008 to set up his own practice with Richard Clarke.

While with the Marines he started undertaking Triathlons, culminating in a Half Ironman in his first season, as well as representing the Royal Navy in Hockey and Tennis. He has continued to enjoy swimming, cycling and running (he did the London to Brighton cycle race in 2008 and re-commenced Triathlons in the 2010 season).  He also spends his free time with his family, walking his dog and ensuring his garden does not become a jungle.
